I took part in a Long Beach Community Theater production called “On Fatherhood…” With the intention of meeting storytellers and learning about the craft. It was more exciting and fun than I had expected and I met many warm, outgoing and creative people. http://lbcommunitytheater.wixsite.com/lbct
Two of those people are featured in the August 22 episode of Tale Spin.
Max Evans is the Author of “Where’s Pops?” I first heard of his book about fathers when a woman was drawing an add for it on the Holden Community Wall in front of my house. When I met Max at the first LB Community Theater rehearsal I immediately recognized the title and was excited to meet the man, behind the book, behind the sign. Max’s story is about his own parenting as a young single dad and made me like Max even more.

Doyle Smiens also told a story at the production.
He has a great voice, a genuine presence and a brave heart. I am honored that he is involved with Tale Spin. I am fortunate to have recorded several of his stories as well as a candid conversation.
Jupiter 2.0 contributes the music for this episode. They were in the Punk/New Wave seen in Long Beach, LA and Orange County in the 80s. They also got some air time on the new cutting edge, low power radio station KROQ (maybe you’ve heard of it).

I approached another contributor and friend, Maura Hudson to share her experience with her daughter’s diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. After her family came to my house for dinner I was in awe of the attention her daughter’s illness requires, constant checks, pricks, measurements and bolstering using a remote that controls a pump that releases insulin into her daughters body. I did not realize the impact the disease has on every facet of her family’s life. It is an important story to tell. Maura and her family take part in many events and fundraisers for the JDRF.
